When Is the Best Time to Charter a Yacht? A Month-by-Month Guide

Quick answer

The Mediterranean season runs May to September (April to October in Greece and Turkey), with July and August the peak; June and September are the best-value months, with warm seas and lower rates. The Caribbean, Bahamas and BVI season runs from early December to late April, with Christmas and New Year the most expensive weeks, while the Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30.

Choosing when to charter matters almost as much as choosing where. The same yacht can cost a third less in June than in August, and the same island can be glassy calm in June or blowing 25 knots in late July. The yacht fleet also moves with the seasons, so the best yachts are in the Mediterranean in summer and in the Caribbean and Bahamas in winter.

This guide sets out the season month by month for the nine cruising grounds US travelers book most, then explains the weather patterns behind it: the Aegean meltemi, the Atlantic hurricane season and the shoulder-season sweet spot.

When is the yacht charter season?

There are two main seasons. The Mediterranean runs May to September (April to October in Greece and Turkey), peaking in July and August. The Caribbean, Bahamas and Virgin Islands run from early December to late April, peaking over Christmas and New Year.

Most large crewed yachts work both seasons. They leave Europe in late November, crossing the Atlantic via Gibraltar and the Canary Islands, and return in April and May via the Azores. That repositioning shapes availability: in early December and late April, some yachts are still in transit or in yard periods, and in the Med, May is when the full fleet is back in position.

Month-by-month yacht charter calendar

The table shows how each region rates in each month for a crewed charter. "Peak" means best weather and highest prices; "Shoulder" means good conditions and better value; "Limited" means few crewed yachts operate; "Off" means the crewed season has effectively ended.

When is the best time to charter a yacht in the Mediterranean?

June and September are the best all-round months: warm water, long days, settled weather and lower rates than July and August. July and August deliver the hottest weather and the liveliest harbors, at the highest prices.

Greece and the meltemi

The meltemi is the defining weather feature of a Greek summer charter. It is a north wind that blows from about June to September, strongest in July and August, and often reaches Force 6–7 (roughly 22–33 knots), sometimes more. It hits the Cyclades hardest: Mykonos, Paros and Naxos sit right in its path. The Ionian islands (Corfu, Paxos, Lefkada, Kefalonia) and the Saronic Gulf are far more sheltered.

In practice, a July Cyclades itinerary is built around the wind: shorter passages, south-facing anchorages and a spare day for a blow. If your group is prone to seasickness, choose the Ionian or the Saronic in high summer, or go to the Cyclades in June or late September. Our Greece yacht charter guide covers each island group.

Croatia, Italy and the French Riviera

Croatia's season is concentrated from June to September, with July and August busy in Split, Hvar and Dubrovnik. Italy's Amalfi Coast, Sardinia and Aeolian Islands follow a similar pattern. On the French Riviera, the calendar is shaped by events: the Cannes Film Festival (May 11–22, 2027), the Monaco Grand Prix (June 4–6, 2027) and the Monaco Yacht Show (September 22–25, 2027), all of which raise demand and berth prices.

Balearics and Turkey

The Balearics peak in July and August, with June and September offering easier anchorages around Ibiza, Formentera and Mallorca. Turkey's long season runs from April to October, and the Turquoise Coast can be very hot in midsummer, which makes May, June, September and October particularly pleasant aboard a gulet.

When is the best time to charter a yacht in the Caribbean, Bahamas and BVI?

From early December to late April. January to March brings steady easterly trade winds, dry weather and the full charter fleet in position. Christmas and New Year are the peak, with the highest rates and longest minimum stays.

Caribbean (Leeward Islands, St. Barths, Antigua)

The Leewards season opens with the Antigua Charter Yacht Show (December 4–9, 2026, at Nelson's Dockyard), where brokers inspect the fleet. St. Barths on New Year's Eve, with fireworks over Gustavia harbor, is one of the most sought-after weeks in yachting. Les Voiles de St. Barth, usually held in mid-April, brings a regatta crowd. After Easter, rates soften as yachts prepare to cross to Europe. See our Caribbean yacht charter guide.

Bahamas

The Bahamas peak runs from December to April, busiest from mid-December to March. The shoulder seasons, late April to early May and late October to early November, can offer good value, with warm water and lighter demand. The Exumas, with their sandbars and shallow, clear banks, are the main charter ground.

BVI

The BVI's crewed season mirrors the wider Caribbean. Its short distances and sheltered Sir Francis Drake Channel make it reliable across the winter months, and it has a large fleet of crewed catamarans.

What about hurricane season?

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. According to NOAA, activity peaks around September 10, with a secondary peak in the Caribbean in mid-October.

Most crewed superyachts leave the Caribbean before the season begins, so summer and early autumn availability there is limited. If you do charter in the Caribbean or Bahamas between June and November, check that the contract includes a hurricane addendum. The standard version lets you reschedule if a named storm threatens the cruising area within 48 hours of the start. Travel insurance that covers named storms is also worth having.

Why is shoulder season the best value?

Shoulder season offers most of the peak-season weather at lower prices and with quieter harbors. In places such as Montenegro, July–August rates run about 25–40% above shoulder season.

The savings come from more than the rate card:

  • Berths are easier. Marinas in Saint-Tropez, Porto Cervo or Hvar are far easier to book in June or September, which saves APA and stress.
  • Owners flex. Outside peak weeks, owners are more open to non-Saturday starts and shorter charters, which are normally priced at the weekly rate divided by six times the number of days.
  • The sea is warm in September. Much of the Mediterranean reaches its warmest water temperatures in late summer and early autumn.
  • The meltemi eases. By late September the Aegean is usually calmer.

The trade-off is weather risk at the edges: an early May or late October week can bring cooler days and an unsettled forecast. For a fuller cost picture, see yacht charter cost.

How do seasons affect booking lead times?

Peak weeks book furthest ahead. Christmas and New Year in the Caribbean and Bahamas, and July and August in the Med, often sell out more than a year in advance on the most popular yachts. Shoulder-season weeks remain available much later. Read how far in advance to book a yacht charter for timelines.

Our view

If your dates are flexible, choose June or September in the Mediterranean and January to March in the Caribbean. If your dates are fixed by school holidays, book early and pick a cruising ground that suits the season: the Ionian over the Cyclades in August, the Bahamas or BVI over the Leewards for a calmer family winter week. Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to charter a yacht in the Mediterranean?

June and September are the best all-round months: the sea is warm, the weather is settled, harbors are less crowded than in July and August, and rates are often lower. September also brings some of the warmest water of the year in much of the Med. Choose July or August only if school holidays or events fix your dates.

When is the best time to charter a yacht in the Caribbean?

The Caribbean season runs from early December to late April. January to March offers steady trade winds and dry weather, while Christmas and New Year are the most expensive and book out first. Late April and early May can offer good value as yachts prepare to cross back to the Mediterranean.

Should I avoid Greece in August because of the meltemi?

Not necessarily, but plan around it. The meltemi is a strong north wind that blows from about June to September and is strongest in July and August, hitting the Cyclades hardest. The Ionian, the Saronic Gulf and the Peloponnese are far more sheltered, and a good captain will route around the wind.

Can you charter a yacht during hurricane season?

Yes, but with care. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, peaking around September 10, and most crewed yachts leave the Caribbean for the summer. The Bahamas and parts of the Caribbean see some summer charters, and many contracts include a hurricane addendum that allows rescheduling if a named storm threatens within 48 hours of the start.

Is it cheaper to charter a yacht in the shoulder season?

Usually, yes. In places such as Montenegro, July–August rates run about 25–40% above the shoulder season, and owners are more open to shorter charters and flexible start days outside peak weeks. Marina berths are also easier to secure, which saves money from the APA.

When is the cheapest time to charter a yacht?

The edges of each season are the cheapest: April, May and October in the Med, and late April, May, November and early December in the Caribbean and Bahamas, avoiding holiday weeks. Weather is less predictable at the edges, so weigh savings against the chance of a cooler or windier week.

Charter rates, APA, VAT and fees quoted are approximate, vary by yacht and season, and change often. Confirm current figures with your broker at booking.
