How Far in Advance Should You Book a Yacht Charter?

Quick answer

Book a crewed yacht charter at least 6 months ahead and ideally about 12 months ahead. Christmas and New Year in the Caribbean and Bahamas, July and August in the Med, event weeks such as the Monaco Grand Prix, and sought-after 50m+ yachts often book more than a year out; shoulder-season weeks can still be found a few weeks or months before departure.

The single most common reason charterers end up on their third-choice yacht is booking too late. The best crewed yachts, especially those with long-serving crews, fill their peak weeks a year or more ahead. Shoulder-season weeks, by contrast, often remain open well into the season.

This guide sets out realistic lead times by season and event, explains holiday minimum stays, and lists what sells out first.

How far in advance should you book a yacht charter?

Book at least 6 months ahead, and ideally about 12 months, for a peak-season week. Holidays, major events and popular 50m+ yachts often book more than a year out.

There is also an upper limit. Booking more than about 18 months ahead is difficult because many owners have not yet set their own use of the yacht or their rates for that season. The sweet spot for most peak weeks is 9–14 months before departure.

Yacht charter lead times by season and event

Lead times vary more with the week than with the destination. The table below gives recommended booking windows for the most common charter periods.

Charter period Recommended lead time When to start looking Notes
Caribbean / Bahamas, Christmas–New Year 12–18 months Spring of the year before Minimum stays of about 7–14 nights common
St. Barths New Year's Eve 12–18 months As soon as owners release dates The most contested week in the Caribbean
Caribbean / Bahamas, January–March 6–12 months April–May of the prior year Good choice remains into the autumn
Caribbean / Bahamas, late April–May 2–6 months Winter Yachts preparing to cross to Europe
Med, July–August 9–14 months November–December of the prior year School-holiday weeks go first
Med, June and September 4–9 months Winter Best balance of choice and value
Med, May and October 1–4 months Late winter or spring Shorter charters easier
Monaco Grand Prix (June 4–6, 2027) 12+ months Immediately after the prior race Trackside berths extremely scarce
Cannes Film Festival (May 11–22, 2027) 9–12 months Previous summer Riviera berths and yachts tighten
Shoulder-season gaps, any region Weeks to 2 months Ask your broker for open dates Rate negotiation more likely

These are guidelines drawn from broker practice, not rules. Availability depends on the individual yacht and the owner's plans.

When should you book a winter Caribbean or Bahamas charter?

Start looking in April or May for the coming winter, and earlier still for Christmas and New Year, which often book more than a year ahead.

The Caribbean season runs from early December to late April. January to March weeks are in high demand but the fleet is large, so good options typically remain through the summer. The holiday period is a different market: it is the peak of the season, rates are at their highest, and the most popular yachts are often committed by the previous winter. St. Barths for New Year's Eve, with fireworks over Gustavia harbor at midnight, is the hardest week of all. See our St. Barts yacht charter guide.

Holiday minimum stays

Many popular yachts require a longer minimum charter over Christmas and New Year, commonly 7–14 nights, and some larger yachts in St. Barths ask for 14 nights. Policies vary yacht by yacht, so ask your broker to confirm the minimum, the exact embarkation date and whether the holiday rate applies to the whole charter.

When should you book a summer Mediterranean charter?

November to December of the previous year is the ideal time to secure July or August. June and September dates remain more widely available into the new year.

Two forces set the Mediterranean timeline. First, school holidays: July and early August are the most requested weeks for US families. Second, the yacht's own schedule: many yachts reposition from the Caribbean in April and May and are back in their summer base by late May, so owners confirm their summer calendar in the autumn. Our guide to the best time to charter a yacht explains the season month by month.

How far ahead do you book for events?

Book event weeks a year or more ahead. The Monaco Grand Prix, which in 2027 runs June 4–6 as Monaco's first sprint weekend, is the most extreme case, because trackside berths in Port Hercule are very limited.

Event charters often come with special terms: minimum durations, higher rates, berth fees passed through the APA, and limits on day guests. The Cannes Film Festival (May 11–22, 2027) and the Monaco Yacht Show (September 22–25, 2027) also tighten Riviera availability, though for different reasons; during the show, many yachts are on display rather than on charter. For race-week specifics, read our Monaco Grand Prix yacht charter guide.

What sells out first?

The same yachts and weeks fill first every year. In rough order:

  1. Christmas and New Year in St. Barths, the wider Caribbean and the Bahamas.
  2. Monaco Grand Prix week and trackside berths.
  3. Sought-after 50m+ superyachts with strong crews and recent refits, often 12+ months ahead.
  4. July and early August on the French Riviera, Amalfi Coast, Sardinia, Mykonos and Hvar.
  5. Yachts with family-friendly layouts, such as convertible cabins and plenty of twin berths, in school-holiday weeks.
  6. Top crewed catamarans in the BVI over the holidays and spring break.

Shoulder-season weeks, mid-size yachts in less famous cruising grounds, and charters that start in a yacht's home port remain available longest.

Is it worth waiting for a last-minute deal?

Only if you are flexible. Late availability is real outside peak weeks, and owners may accept shorter charters or a better rate to fill a gap, but you give up choice of yacht, crew and itinerary.

Short charters are typically priced at the weekly rate divided by six, multiplied by the number of days. The best last-minute opportunities appear in May, June and late September in the Med, and in late April, May and November in the Caribbean and Bahamas. For a holiday week or a specific yacht, waiting rarely pays.

What happens once you book?

On standard MYBA terms you pay a 50% deposit on signing, and the balance, APA, taxes and any delivery fee about five weeks before embarkation. Booking early therefore spreads payments over a longer period, but also commits you sooner, so check the cancellation terms. Our guide to how a yacht charter works walks through each step, and yacht charter cost explains what to budget.

Our view

For a peak-season week on a specific style of yacht, start talking to a broker about 12 months ahead and sign within a few weeks of finding the right one. For flexible dates in the shoulder season, there is less urgency, and waiting can sometimes improve the price.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should you book a yacht charter?

At least 6 months and ideally about 12 months for a peak-season week. For Christmas, New Year, July and August, major events and popular 50m+ yachts, start more than a year ahead. Shoulder-season weeks can often be booked 1–3 months out.

When should I book a Christmas yacht charter in the Caribbean?

Start in the spring of the same year at the latest, and ideally more than a year ahead. Christmas and New Year in the Caribbean and Bahamas are the most in-demand weeks in chartering, and many yachts require longer minimum stays, often 7–14 nights, over the holidays.

When should I book a summer Mediterranean yacht charter?

November to December of the previous year is the ideal time to secure July or August. Many good yachts still have June and September dates into the new year, but the best-known yachts and school-holiday weeks go first.

Can you book a last-minute yacht charter?

Yes, especially outside peak weeks. Yachts sometimes have gaps between bookings and may accept shorter charters, typically priced at the weekly rate divided by six times the number of days. Choice is narrower, so be flexible on yacht, start port and dates.

How far ahead should I book a yacht for the Monaco Grand Prix?

As early as possible, ideally a year or more ahead. The 2027 race runs June 4–6, and yachts with trackside berths in Port Hercule are among the scarcest bookings of the year. Event contracts often have special terms, so read them closely.

Can you book a yacht charter too early?

Sometimes. More than about 18 months out, many owners have not set their plans or rates for that season, so the full fleet may not be available to book. Around 12 months ahead is usually the sweet spot for peak weeks.

Charter rates, APA, VAT and fees quoted are approximate, vary by yacht and season, and change often. Confirm current figures with your broker at booking.
